RAD Monika. Discovering Portugal through Gran Fondo Lisboa

RAD Monika. Discovering Portugal through Gran Fondo Lisboa

As an adventure cyclist I love travelling and discovering new countries by bike. This might be the best way to see a country – slow enough to soak in the atmosphere and culture but fast enough to cover distance in a relatively short amount of time.

Thus, I was very excited when I received the opportunity to explore a new country: Portugal, through the cycling challenge, Gran Fondo Lisboa.

Being on the outskirts of Europe, Portugal is not a country where you just stumble upon. As I prefer visiting by bike and always look for an “excuse” to visit a new country, the 140km Gran Fondo Lisboa was perfect.

With the first edition of this Gran Fondo, it was very impressive to hear that 1200 participants have lined up to the event.

The first 25 km led through Portugal’s capital and were neutralized which gave me the opportunity to look around. Once outside the city, the course had always something interesting to offer. The route led through towns with cheering people lined up on the side. The profile was interesting and reminded me of Belgian terrain. When it goes up, it was steep. At one point, I saw 18% on my Garmin. There were also a few cobble sections that mixed up the rhythm of the race.

The finishing stretch was along the coastal line overviewing the Atlantic Ocean. Very spectacular!

I very much enjoyed the experience because it was a great mixture of sightseeing and challenge. The event doesn’t stop there as the great offering of post-race meals.

Thanks to Gobik and Gran Fondo Lisboa for this great opportunity to be part of this inaugural event!
