Exploring Castellón's secret routes: Julia and Alex's Bikepacking Adventure

Explorando las rutas secretas de Castellón: La Aventura de Bikepacking de Julia y Álex

In the transition to the 2025 season, Julia and Alex, two trail running athletes embarked on a different kind of adventure: a bikepacking challenge through the interior of Castellón. What started as a way to vary their training, ended up being an unforgettable experience, full of discoveries, learning and anecdotes. Below, they share with us the details of their journey, the preparation, the equipment they used and how this challenge connects them with their goals for next season.

How did the idea of doing this bikepacking adventure in preseason come up?

Cycling is a key tool in our cross-training as mountain runners. During the season, it allows us to accumulate hours of work without the impact of racing. Being in preseason, we wanted to get out of the routine and plan something different: a long and challenging route, combining training and enjoyment.

What were you looking for with this challenge, beyond cross-training?

We wanted to disconnect and enjoy the scenery while adding hours of training. Our goal was to reach Morella, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, which Alex did not know. We left from Eslida, our current town, covering about 300 km with 4100 meters of positive elevation gain in two days. During the route, we crossed emblematic places like Aín, Culla, Vilafamés and Ares del Maestrat. It was a way to combine sport with active tourism.

How was your preparation for this challenge?

The first thing was to plan the route, including possible stops for coffee and lunch. We opted to carry the bare minimum, inspired by some bikepacking videos. Our equipment included compact bags with the essentials: a pair of light shoes, thermal clothing such as Gobik down, some energy food and tools for possible emergencies - which fortunately we didn't use.

What would you highlight about the Gobik gear?

Essential garments that made a difference, especially for comfort and performance in cold and windy conditions.

  • Absolute 7.0 bib tights: Essential for long days on the bike, comfortable, breathable and resistant to wind and rain.
  • T-shirt Limber Skin: Quick drying, ideal to avoid moisture on demanding rides.
  • Skimo jacket: Essential in winter, lightweight but highly protective in low temperatures.

Memorable moment or anecdote that you want to highlight?

One of the most special moments was tasting the typical products of each village. From the flaons of Morella to the chocolate ensaimadas of Vilafamés, each stop left us with a delicious memory. In addition, we recorded the whole experience for our YouTube channel, where we show the fun and human side of this adventure.

Julia, what did it mean to you to cycle through the area where you were born and raised?

It was very special to show Alex places I knew during my childhood. Doing it by bike added a touch of challenge and excitement, as we had never faced such a long route with so much elevation gain.

What did you learn on this adventure that you can apply to your trail training?

The bike is a valuable tool for adding volume without the risk of injury, something that complements running perfectly. However, it is clear to us that in the specific phases of the season, the running sessions will be our priority.

What are your goals for 2025?

Alex: My season will focus on big goals such as Sierre Zinal and the Canfranc World Cup, as well as defender the title of Spanish champion. I will also debut in the Seville marathon, a challenge that motivates me a lot.

Julia: My goals include Zegama, Vall de Aran and the Canfranc World Championship, along with the Barcelona half marathon as preparation. I hope this adventure will be the beginning of a year full of emotions.

Julia and Alex's experience is an invitation to explore new paths, connect with the environment and push limits, all with the help of Gobik gear, which makes adventures like this one possible. We hope you enjoyed the adventure and that their experience encourages you to discover new routes, and we'll see you on the roads!
