Cycling Getaway: Capítulo 6, Calpe

The Costa Blanca, and in particular Calpe, is a dream destination for cycling enthusiasts. Thanks to its quiet roads, demanding mountain passes, mild climate and incredible landscapes, the region has been a magnet for both professional and amateur cyclists for several years. At Gobik, we want you to make the most of your experience in this cycling paradise. That's why we present three routes starting and finishing in Calpe, each with an iconic pass and local gastronomic options to enjoy after your cycling days.

Route 1: Calpe - Coll de Rates - Calpe

The Coll de Rates is one of the most famous climbs on the Costa Blanca. With a length of 6.6 km and an average gradient of 5.3%, it is a steady climb, which makes it ideal for interval training, the road is good with wide curves and the scenery will leave you speechless. The panoramic view from the top is spectacular, with the blue Mediterranean Sea between the mountains and vegetation of the area.

It is the most frequented port by professionals in the area, it is almost impossible not to find one (or more) key pieces of the peloton training there. A demanding circular route of 72km with constant up and down between quiet roads and spectacular views.

Distance: 72 km

Accumulated elevation gain: 1.500 m

Route 2: Calpe - Vall d'Ebo - Calpe

Vall d'Ebo is a climb with great character, 9 km long and an average gradient of 5.4%. The first part is the most demanding, with sections exceeding 10%. However, the ascent is softened and allows you to enjoy an environment surrounded by mountains and wide curves. At the top, the views over the valleys are incredible.

This 94km route will take you to the spectacular area of La Vall d'Ebo, a valley of great beauty in the interior of the province of Alicante, known for its mountainous environment and low vegetation. It is usually a windy area.

Distance: 94 km

Accumulated difference in altitude: 1,600 m

Route 3: Calpe - Cumbre del Sol - Calpe

The Cumbre del Sol (Puig de Llorençà) is a short but brutal climb. Only 4 km long and with an average gradient of 9.7%, it has sections with gradients of over 20%. This pass has been the scene of iconic moments in the Vuelta a España and is a mandatory challenge for any cyclist who wants to test their endurance.

A circular and demanding route, despite being short (68km), there are tough climbs, including the aforementioned Cumbre del Sol pass, one of the toughest in the province.
