Cycling in the Penedès

There is a land in Barcelona, wedged between mountains and sea, famous for its vineyards, cava and wine, which emerges as an ideal setting to enjoy cycling. Its name? The Penedès, and it is no longer just a label of quality wines made from grapes, little by little, it is filling up with cycling lovers.

"We are very aware that we are in a very well positioned area: near the mountains, also near the sea, where we can do specific training among vineyards and, in a few kilometers, ride through a mountainous area to make slope".

They speak to us from the Penedès Nord Club Ciclista, a group of cycling enthusiasts who ride the routes of the area every weekend with a striking design that arises from Gobik. Fifty cyclists for whom cycling is a way of life. It is good for optimal physical fitness, but at the same time, with it "you forget about problems while pedaling, you share stories with the people in the group and you get home as good as new".

"No matter how hard you try to describe it, you have to live it to understand it," they proclaim.

Getting to know the territory

The centrality of the area leaves them close to everything. "It may sound cliché, but it is so, the Penedès is a paradise for the cyclist, especially for the cyclist, we have the sea and the mountains very close, very quiet roads with landscapes of vineyards, Tuscany style. It looks flat, but it is very leg-breaking".

They usually meet in Sant Quintí de Mediona, a name that tastes like cava. Then they take the route to La Llacuna, already in Anoia, or even to Santa Coloma de Queralt, without cars through Conca de Barberà. In the opposite direction, they have the option of doing vineyards and vineyards by small roads and landscapes that surprise with castles, such as Foix, towards Vilanova i La Geltrú, already in the sea.

But there is more: "The Penedès has a wide variety of areas that are ideal for cyclists, with few cars and stunning scenery. The area of Pontons and La Llacuna, with forest and trees, is one. It is the mountainous part of the Penedès. The "Plana del Penedès" means sailing through a sea of vines through Lavern and Sant Pau d'Ordal. Then there are the Creu de l'Aragall and Els Casots, two gentle "ports" at the end of the region, with access to the Baix de Llobregat, the first, and the Castle of Subirats, on the other".

All this that we describe is between Tarragona and Barcelona, but away from the hustle and bustle, without stress and with little traffic, a place to combine cycling and wine tourism activities, when the outing is over.

A group that does not stop growing

As we said, there are currently about fifty members, but their Whatsapp group to share the "meetings" reaches 200 people. Among them about eighty girls to shape a section that is part of the project "Women in Bike" of the Spanish Cycling Federation. Penedès Nord Women are called.

In the family, all kinds of cyclists ride: "Some compete, but the vast majority is a cyclotourist with no other objective than to enjoy the sport in company". But beware: "This doesn't mean that there are no healthy rivalries when it comes to cycling among us".

Saturday is the day of strong output, there are as many as possible, always by the Whatsapp group, a group that does not stop growing, and for this, not only go out once or twice a week, they also make trips to places like Andorra or Montseny, or go to cyclotourist marches. Everything adds up and makes the internal activity of a club that was born a little more than a year ago, in December 2021, grow.

A young club, but with aspirations

It all came about as a result of the geographic restrictions after the hardest phase of Covid-19. Being limited to circulate in their area, they began to be different members. Each one brought his own group, with the Penedès at their mercy. From there, the group began to grow, we asked to Gobik equipment was requested and more people wanted to join until we reached this point.

2023 looks like great things, but always together, always by bike and of course, from the Penedès.
