Ivan Basso in the virtual Giro. Stages 6 and 7

The final stretch of the Virtual Giro has climbed to the highest part of the Italian boot, with a mountainous day on the Piedmonton the border with France, and the final time trial in Milan.

All this to put an end to a very special edition, the first, an event that "we have been able to enjoy at a difficult time for everyone, we have managed to live the Giro in a different way", he says. Ivan Bassowho applauds the final result of the virtual race.

An applause that includes valuable donations to the Italian Red Crossat a time as hard as the present.

An experience that is here to stay

But not only that, this virtual Giro has put professionals and amateurs, young and not so young, on the same level: "The 2.0 generation has found a totally new use for the bicycle and it has been at a time when there was no other way to enjoy it. It was like planning a week of gran fondo, each week with two stages".

And not only that, because the mix of all kinds of audiences has built "an experience that can be repeated, because even in normal life people work and do not have all the time they would like. Now you can think about racing at night. I'm sure the cycling community will be strengthened," he concludes.

Between Sestriere and Milan

For Ivan Basso, Sestriere has never played a big role in his sporting life, but that doesn't stop him from recognizing that "it's one of the most important mountain passes of the Giroa mythical mountain for Italy, but also for the Giro. Toura summit where the two big ones meet".

Then there is the final time trial in Milan, the epilogue of fifteen kilometers that puts the icing on the cake in a city important to Ivan: "In Milan I won the 2006 Giro, a beautiful city that is getting into the hands of cycling. Arriving here in pink was magical, so close to home, in the capital of my region".

Now we can only hope that the real Giro will take place on its new dates, that everything will improve and that virtual cycling will remain a complement to the real thing.
