EXO Jacket in depth: for extreme rain and more

Chaqueta EXO a fondo: para lluvia extrema y mucho más

Protection against extreme rain, without avoiding concepts so appreciated by the cyclist as breathability, fit, simplicity and above all: versatility.

Although it is in the highest range of coverage and performance among the new garments from Gobik for this winter, the EXO jacket is intended to be a permanent fixture on cold weather outings, with or without the threat of rain.

To this end, it boasts one of the virtues that we pointed out earlier, its versatility, a concept that is summarized in its breadth of use: from extreme rain as maximum demand, to be a companion in any outing, thanks to how simple and light it is folded.

The lightness of the piece is 207 grams, easy to carry in the pockets, but an excellent ally when the day gets complicated, especially in winter days of uncertain weather and threatening clouds.

Tested in the Giro d'Italia

"It is a very valid garment, capable of repelling water and keeping the inside completely dry. It's quite versatile, so it's not only useful on rainy days, but also on cold days," explains Francesco Gavazzi cyclist of the Eolo Kometa, who used the EXO in some of the days of the last Giro d'Italia.

His teammate, Samuel Rivi also took it out during the Corsa Rosa: "It's a very well thought-out product, you can feel it's been worked on down to the last detail. For me it is very important that its effectiveness against water is maximum and I think it achieves it".

The fact that it is light, that it folds up well, that it can be used in different environments, even for bikepacking, does not distract it from responding efficiently to its main task, to protect the cyclist who is caught in the middle of a downpour or a powerful drop in temperature.

In this aspect Rivi points out that "during the days prior to this concentration, I have been using it in my training with temperatures that were always around zero degrees and it is appreciated to have a garment of this type, which not only protects you from the rain, but also insulates you from the cold on the descents".

"You always hope you won't need to use it, but when it has been necessary, it has worked wonders," says the Italian cyclist.

Water, out

The EXO jacket is designed specifically for extreme rain conditions. Something that can occur without warning on long rides where no shelter is available. Its water column is 10,000 mm and all seams have been thoroughly heat-sealed to prevent rain penetration.

"I feel very protected," continues Gavazzi. "During the preseason I've been using it in my area during training sessions lasting more than three hours, in not very good weather. For other disciplines such as gravel it is ideal, as it keeps the body heat very well without making you sweat."

To complete the "anti-water" pack, point out the extended skirt at the end of the back to protect against splashes from the rear wheel.

Fit, mobility and breathability

"It fits very well to the body and that for us is fundamental. Other jackets of this type also don't let water through, but are nevertheless very un-aerodynamic. That's not the case here," says Gavazzi.

The patterning also means that in the areas where mobility is required, the fabric is narrower and more elastic. "You can move perfectly with it and it is not uncomfortable, because it does not generate air pockets due to its good fit to the body. It's never comfortable to ride a bike in the rain, but this jacket makes it much better," Rivi proposes.

All of the above virtues are woven into one aspect that is highly appreciated by the cyclist: breathability. Its thermo-sealed finishes for wind and rain are complemented by the "DVstorm™ membrane of eVent®" that effectively wicks away perspiration.

Quick release Velcro closure

On the front there is an additional Velcro, parallel to the zipper, very efficient in specific situations to put on and take off: "A very important feature of this jacket is the possibility of fastening it with the zipper or with the Velcro, for greater ease in times of high wind, or when for example it is very cold and fastening a zipper becomes a very complicated task," says Gavazzi.

It's perfect for when "the peloton is going very fast or when it's very cold," emphasizes Rivi, and Gavazzi adds: "When you don't need it, it's very easy to fold it up and put it in a pocket in your pocket. jersey”.
