For a long time, Mark Heij kept asking himself the same question that runs through many cyclists' minds: what kind of cyclist am I? Over time, he stopped trying to fit into a specific category. "I discovered that I don't need to define myself to be a cyclist".
For him, cycling comes down to two essential things: the thrill of exploring the unknown and the genuine pleasure of enjoying time on the bike. A way of understanding this sport that perfectly reflects his life off the bike: curious, experimental, and completely detached from established formulas.
Design, inspiration and the Custom process
Mark's creative approach moves away from traditional cycling aesthetics and finds inspiration in the clean, bold lines of classic football kits. "I love mixing other styles with cycling. Why limit yourself to what is usually done in the industry?"
Green underpins the entire visual proposal. It is the color that best represents Mark: it was present in the first computer he built and has been part of his identity for years. That is why making it the absolute protagonist of the palette was a non-negotiable condition.

Our Gobik Custom team was responsible for bringing Mark's vision to life, paying attention to the smallest details so the design would be perfect.
"I wanted the logos positioned correctly for maximum visibility while I ride," he explains, "A logo on the shoulder, for example, is perfect because it's the area that gets photographed the most when you're tucked over the handlebars". Thanks to a quick exchange of ideas about colors and placement, we were able to apply the adjustments swiftly, making the process smooth and relaxed.
The non-negotiables of performance
A custom kit is a statement of intent, but it still has to perform. On the road, the absolute foundation for Mark is comfort.
"Spending hours on the bike is impossible if you don't feel comfortable," Mark points out. For him, true comfort is the natural result of a precise fit combined with excellent fabrics; it has to disappear completely during the ride.
But there is also a clear psychological factor in looking good.

"I look like a real pro," Mark jokes. "It gives me a huge confidence boost. I wanted to express my own personality, because not trying to fit in is something that has stayed with me all my life. Although I hope people don't think I'm arrogant".
Favorite route and must-stop spots
If you want to run into Mark wearing his new Gobik kit, you'll most likely find him training on a legendary stretch of Dutch tarmac: the Rotterdam rowing course. View route
Don’t let the flat landscape fool you; this is pro cycling territory. It is the very testing ground where professionals such as Demi Vollering, Ide Schelling and Dylan van Baarle have trained. Mark’s usual route includes intervals at the rowing track, a breakaway towards Gouda and the ride back to Rotterdam following the river.
No ride is complete without a technical stop. Although he usually stops by his parents’ house halfway through the route for a coffee and a chat, his favorite place to finish a ride and catch up with the local community is Maats, in Rotterdam.

However, the flat horizons of the Netherlands are not the only setting. Mark is already planning his next big trip: "Japan. I’m organizing a 14-day bikepacking trip there with friends for this year, to explore a totally unique place by bike".
